TIPS FOR MOVING WITH PETS

Overall moving can be super stressful for the whole family. We can sometimes forget that it’s also hard on our fur babies! They easily can be stressed out from new environments and changes in their home. We’re here to provide some tips that can help ease this process for them.

Before Moving

Whether you have cats or dogs, it’s important to start preparing them for moving. The more comfortable you can get them, the easier it will be. If you are moving with a cat it’s important to get them used to a pet carrier. The best way to do this is leaving it open and making it inviting. Adding a blanket and putting cat treats inside should do the trick. This will help familiarize them and reduce their anxiety. Once they’re comfortable, you can move on to small car rides. Starting with short 10 minute rides then slowly moving up to 20 minutes will help get your cat adjusted to leaving the house and decrease their anxiety.
If you have a dog you may consider getting them used to the neighborhood by going on walks near the new home. If you’re able to, walk by the new house and have your dog familiarize themselves with the scents and environment.
While packing it’s best not to isolate your animals, allow them to sniff around and see what’s going on. If you isolate them in a separate room it can cause additional stress for both you and your pet.

Moving Day

When it comes to moving day with your cat, their cat carrier is the best place for them to be. If it’s too hot/cold then your next best option would be the bathroom. The key is to make sure they have their litter box, food and water so they can be comfortable until the wild parts of moving have calmed down. Be sure to keep the door closed as well!
But what about your pup? The best tip we can give is to find a friend or family member to watch your dog. You’ll want to find someone who doesn’t need to be involved with moving so they can keep the dog company and distracted from all that’s going on in the home.

Helping Pets Adjust

Once you’re finally in your new home, the movers have left and you’re ready to settle in, it’s time to let your pet roam around. You’ll want to close any windows/doors and block off any crawl spaces for your cat to make sure they are safe. You may notice that your cat will “disappear” for a few days and this is perfectly normal! This new experience may be overwhelming for them and hiding away will allow them to adjust. If you can, choose a room to be their area. You can put their food, water, toys, litter box, etc. in this room to help comfort them. You may also want to add items from your old home so they can pick up the scent and identify that it’s a safe space.
It’s important to stick to normal schedules once moving as well. Feeding at their regular time, as well as walking your dog and taking them out for exercise. If you’re able to take a few days to spend at home with your pet, that can help them adjust to the new environment as well. Use these days to slowly get your pet used to being home alone.

Summary

Moving with pets can seem like an overwhelming process, but with these tips you can ensure it will go smoothly. You can also check in with your pet’s vet for additional help if your pet needs extra care. Happy moving and congratulations on your new home!
